The petition by Roman Polanski's entertainment colleagues to get him released is a loyal gesture, but outrageously ignorant and inconsiderate at its heart. The single mention of his crime in the petition is this:
"His arrest follows an American arrest warrant dating from 1978 against the filmmaker, in a case of morals."
A case of morals??? That's it??? Are you kidding me??? For God's sake, he drugged up an 8th grader and then raped her! The fact that, after more than 30 years, his crime is swept aside with an innocuous euphemism is despicable. It really displays a complete lack of respect and consideration to all rape victims. The rest of the petition asking for his release based on cultural event reasons is sickening as well. While we don't truly know what is in Polanski's heart, it seems there is no doubt that Polanski deserves forgiveness: the victim has forgiven him, he admitted wrongdoing, and he settled financially with her. But, Polanski should be extradited, not just to face the justice he has avoided, but to reaffirm the integrity and importance of coming to terms with and facing the truth...a principle that some of the entertainment elite obviously need to learn.
